Crispy Onion Rings with an extra crunch - Recipe

Onion rings are a delight to crunch into provided they don't get soft after frying. Here's a recipe for cripsy onion rings to generate that extra crunch. The right proportion of corn flour, all purpose flour and bread crumbs is the secret to the success of the crispy onion rings recipe.
The use of spices heightens the flavour and taste of the fried onion rings.

Ingredients for Crispy Onion Rings

  • 1 white onion (brown/red onions will also do)
  • 6 tbsp all purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp corn flour
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp chilli flakes
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper powder
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida
  • 2 tbsp cheddar cheese (grated)
  • 10-12 tbsp bread crumbs (for coating)
  • 1/2 cup water (a little, for the batter)
  • salt (to taste)
  • oil (for deep frying)

Steps for Preparation for Crispy Onion Rings

  • Mx all the dry ingredients in a bowl, except the bread crumbs.
  • Add some water - a little at a time - to get a consistency of a thick cake-like batter (not watery)
  • Slice the onions into rounds (around 1/4 inch thick), then coat each onion ring in the batter.

  • Then dip the "battered" (no pun intended) rings in bread crumbs and place the coated rings on a flat board.
  • Deep fry the onion rings till nice and brown and crisp.
